131. Verbascum Thapsus

131. Verbascum Thapsus

This was a hard one to get right - both in terms of naming and in terms of getting an interesting and acceptable photo.

As for the naming - I've spend a lot of time trying to figure out what it was called - none of my usual resources didn't get me anywhere. Finally it was a lucky Google Image search on "yellow flower spikes" that led me in the right direction. So this is Verbascum Thapsus, also known as Great or Common Mullein.

The photo - I've been at the location three times to get a decent photo of this impressive plant (it's about 2.5m tall), but weren't ever satisfied with the results and actually decided not to post any of it. But after reviewing the photos today I thought this one (from my first trip to the place) might work after all. It's photographed from my tripod, close to the ground and with a corded flash to the right to make it stand out.
